"They inflicted the greatest injury and cruelty, yet counted themselves firm in the Covenant"

On the newsgroup talk.religion.bahai, there has been considerable discussion from time to time about shunning, as practiced by the sans-Guardian Baha'is, those who currently occupy the headquarters in Haifa and Wilmette.  Remarkably, some of the members of that group have the audacity to deny that the behavior is taking place, or relegate it to some historical practice that is no longer being carried out.

The reality is that the sans-Guardian Baha'is have been consistently perverting the Faith's teachings about shunning Covenant-breakers, to carry out the most atrocious, cult-like and demonic, mind-control methods of thought control, for the purpose of keeping its membership in line, so that the leadership of the organization can effectively control the minds and behavior of its world-wide adherents.

With the constant threat of being shunned, to have all of your friends and family leave you and refuse any contact whatsoever, the sans-Guardian Bahai leadership controls what its members do, think and say, down to very minute details such as with whom they might associate and the details of which conversations and reading materials that are acceptable and which are not.  Failure to heed these threats results in shunning, and if the friends and family of the shunned person do not comply, they too are shunned.  As a result, a number of the sans-Guardian Bahai's who wish to read what they want, hear ideas they want to hear, and associate with persons as they wish, have to sneak around out of fear that they will be caught by the authorities and then ostracized by their friends and family. In some countries, my fellow Orthodox Baha'is are in constant fear of harassment and threats from extreme fanatical members of the sans-Guardian Baha'is, and must conduct their activities in secret lest they become victims of violent crimes against them. This is going on in many communities around the world today. Of course, this is kept hidden from the rank and file believers, but just because violence isn't being threatened in your nice suburban towns in the United States does not mean that it is not occurring secretly in other countries that enjoy less police protection than you have.

Let me state clearly for the record that shunning is a part of the Bahai teaching and history, but it must be understood what covenant-breaking was historically and how shunning was actually carried out.  To gloss over the truth of the teachings and their historical context is part of the cult-like attitude displayed by the sans-Guardian Baha'is.  It is important to be clear on this.

The teachings about shunning are best summarized in Abdu'l-Baha's Last Tablet to America, published in Bahai World Faith, p. 428.  The quotes below come from that Tablet.

It is important to understand, first, that covenant-breaking always has meant disobedience to the point of opposition to the Center of the Covenant. "They have arisen against the Center of the Covenant like the people of Bayan who attacked the Blessed Beauty and every moment uttered a calumny." Thus, the Babi's who resisted and opposed Baha'u'llah, those who attacked and opposed Abdu'l-Baha, and those who opposed Shoghi Effendi, all were considered covenant-breakers. The definition of covenant-breaking was unilaterally altered by the Hands of the Cause after the death of Shoghi Effendi.  They had no authority to change the definition.  Until they changed it, it meant opposing the Guardian.  There is no authoritative text to remotely suggest that covenant-breaking means opposition to the authority of the Hands or the headless UHJ they created.  They also broadened the approach to covenant breaking by condemning not only the leaders but also the misled followers of these leaders.  The reality is that covenant-breakers are only the instigators and leaders, ones with selfish ambition and purposes that motivate them, and not the sincere but misled persons deceived by the covenant breakers.

Although historically covenant-breakers opposed the Center of the Covenant, they always attempted to deceive others into believing that they were the ones faithful to the Covenant.  "Every day they wrote and spread a pamphlet opposing Bahá'u'lláh, caused trouble and perplexity among the people; they inflicted the greatest injury and cruelty, yet counted themselves firm in the Covenant of His Holiness, the Báb."  In most instances, the covenant-breakers deceived a multitude of people, such as in the days of Abdu'l-Baha, when most of the Bahais turned against the Master and pledged their allegiance to His brother. "Listen not to the nonsensical utterances of the manifestations of Satan, because the manifestations of Satan are occupying today the observation posts of the glorious path of God, and preventing the people by every means of deception and ruse."

Today is no different.  The covenant-breakers of today, that is, the leaders of the sans-Guardian organization, have misled their followers into believing that the true ones, that is the ones who are loyal and obedient to the Guardian of the Cause, are the covenant-breakers.  The reality is they are the ones opposed to the Guardian and his sworn enemies, even to the point of hauling the Guardian of the Faith into a secular court in the United States to try to prevent him and his organization from using the Greatest Name!  What evil they commit and yet their followers remain blind to it.
[The Court papers can be viewed here: http://trueseeker.typepad.com/true_seeker/court_case.html]

And, yes it is true, that covenant-breakers should be shunned.  That is, the leaders of opposition to the Guardian, the ones who knowingly and actively attack the Guardian, should be shunned.  Not the misled followers, not the unfortunate family members, and not otherwise faithful believers who are caught reading material or talking with those who have been declared covenant breakers. The reason they are shunned is not to impose cult-like thought control upon the membership but to protect the members from the evil and deception perpetrated by these sick souls.

Baha'u'llah and Abdu'l-Baha used strong language to describe these people, much of it metaphorical in order to make the point how dangerous they are.  Covenant-breakers are "weak, capricious, malicious and ignorant souls" all of whom "have been shaken by the earthquake of hatred, of animosity..."  "Their breath is like the poison of the snake that kills instantly." They are like "Satan, in the garb of man." "They are manifestations of Satan." "Their breath is infectious, like unto poison." "Every hour they contrive new intrigues and fraud, and bring forth new calumny."  They are "persons who appear as sheep and in reality are ferocious wolves; they exercise every sort of oppression, endeavor to destroy the foundation of the Covenant, -- and claim to be Bahá'ís. They strike at the root of the Tree of the Covenant -- and count themselves persecuted."

The gullible and misled believers of the sans-Guardian organization, have allowed themselves to be controlled because their evil and demonic leadership has made them fearful of covenant-breakers and of being labeled as covenant-breakers, even though it is that very leadership that is opposed to God and to the true ones of God.  Literally believing that breath can be infectious poison and that they run the risk of spiritual death merely by reading materials or having conversations with certain persons, they have allowed themselves through irrational fear to close their minds.

When Joel B. Marangella (presently the third Guardian of the Cause), was the President of the NSA of France in May of 1960, the NSA received the Proclamation of the Guardianship of Mason Remey and consulted upon its contents.  The NSA voted to accept Mason Remey as the Guardian of the Cause. Thereafter, the Custodian Hands, without any administrative authority to do so, dissolved the French NSA and put its members out of the Faith except those who recanted.  Almost all of Joel B. Marangella's friends in the Faith shunned him, his wife, and his three sons, simply because he had recognized the truth of Remey's Guardianship.  Marangella never again had contact with his father, mother, grandmother, twin sister and her husband and three children, even though all of his family (except for his father) lived in close proximity to him in Orleans, France.

The author of this article, when he recognized the Guardianship of Joel B. Marangella in 1997, even though he attempted to quietly resign from the sans-Guardian organization, was shunned by all of his friends in the Faith, who also shunned his wife and two children simply because his wife would not divorce him and take the children away from him, as they insisted she must.  His nephew, the son of a sans-Guardian believer, does not even know he exists because he is prevented from any contact with the child for fear of catching a spiritual disease.  I think it is too late because anyone who practices this kind of shunning already is suffering from the worst spiritual disease imaginable.

The next in line to be Guardian, Hand of the Cause Nosrat'u'llah Bahremand, when he recognized Joel B. Marangella's Guardianship, was shunned by all of his family and friends.  A Continental Councilor held a meeting with his family, including include his wife, children, elderly mother, sisters, brother, niece, nephew and in-laws (all Baha'is) in the absence of the Nosrat.  The Councilor accused Nosrat of being a covenant-breaker and instructed all of these relatives to shun him and break-up with him, or otherwise they themselves would be shunned.  As instructed, Nosrat's wife immediately separated from him and obtained a divorce.  [CORRECTION: Nosrat has corrected this in his recent article. She was forced to separate but did not divorce.] His daughter was instructed to prevent his grand-children, aged 4 and 2, from ever seeing again their grandfather.  As a result of this, Nosrat's family was broken apart, he lost the family business and the family home.  Nosrat has suffered and continues to suffer deep emotional and financial suffering as a result of the demonic actions of the sans-Guardian organization.

Any clear-thinking and decent person can see that only unmitigated evil is the result of the fanatical mind-control methods of shunning practiced by the sans-Guardian Baha'is.  Those of who you are the misled followers of this demonic organization, when you finally come to the horrible realization of what is occurring within your so-called religion, have no choice but to take action.  You must take a stand against this evil, and withhold your support from the bogus UHJ and the other leaders of your organization.  You are most welcome to join the true Cause of God under the shelter of the Tree of the Covenant by investigating the claims of Joel B. Marangella to the office of the Guardianship and declaring your allegiance and loyalty to the Center of the Covenant.

Baha'i for Sale

In the litigation [http://trueseeker.typepad.com/true_seeker/court_case.html] brought against the Orthodox Baha'is by the NSA of sans-Guardian Bahais currently headquartered in Wilmette, the Wilmette NSA is attempting to prevent the OBF from using the word Bahai, claiming that they own a trademark to the name.  They say that the OBF's use of the word "Bahai" is deceptive, misleading and irreparably damaging to the NSA.  The OBF counters that it is the generic term for a religious teaching, and that the NSA does not have the exclusive right to use the term, and that the OBF's non-commercial use of the word to describe its religious beliefs is lawful.

The thing that is so sick about the Wilmette NSA's actions is that if anyone is damaging the name Bahai, it is them, in the undignified manner in which they advertise and promote the Faith (using billboards, for example).  If you want to see how low it has become, go to amazon.com and search for "Baha'i" and see what you get.  You will find t-shirts, sweatshirts, and caps with slogans such as "Army Baha'i" "Baha'i Power" "Kiss Me I'm Baha'i" and the ever appropriate "Do Not Hate Me Because I'm Baha'i".  You can get "I Love (heart) Baha'u'llah" coffee mugs, and you can be a hit with the ladies with the "I Love (heart) Baha'i Girls" t-shirt.  You can even purchase "I Love (heart) Baha" keychains and a lawn sign resembling a street sign that says "Baha'i Way."

The Wilmette NSA is so protective of the Baha'i name, but it apparently has no problem with the cheapening of the Greatest Name on apparel and novelty items.  They sicken me.

It is the blind leading the blind

Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch.  Matthew 15:14

The one thing that always has bothered me about the situation of the Bahai Faith, upon the death of Shoghi Effendi, was that there was no discussion whatsoever of the question of the continuation of the Guardianship.  In the opinion of the Orthodox Baha'is, the entire Bahai world made a serious mistake by following without question the Custodians into rejection of the Guardianship, one of the essential twin pillars of the Faith.

But, how can it be explained that the entire Bahai world, composed of numerous rational and well-meaning, and intelligent and good people, could take this erroneous path without giving it a single thought?  It boggles the mind to think that so many people can be so mistaken.

But science has an explanation for it, in the study of crowd psychologies and the rational herding instinct.

It seems that when a large number of human beings, acting individually and using the diverse information available to them, will collectively exhibit an amazing intelligence.  For example, the crowd at a horse race making individual bets on the probability that a horse will finish the race first, is composed of a numerous of individuals making their own decisions based upon the information available to each individual.  Because the information is so diverse amongst such a large number of people, the collective wisdom of the crowd is extremely intelligent.  The odds displayed by the horse race crowd is very intelligent and is an accurate predictor of the probability that a specific horse will win the race. When the individuals in a crowd each make their own decisions, there is an incredible collective intelligence in the crowd.

However, when the individuals in a crowd interact with one another about the information, where there is limited public information, the crowd will act like a herd.  That is, the herd instinct will cause the crowd in some situations to be incredibly stupid.  This is known as informational cascades or the rational herding instinct. This is a situation in which every subsequent actor, based on the observations of others, makes the same choice independent of his or her private signal. I will present an example from this web page: http://www.info-cascades.info/:

"Let us presume that you and a lot of other people have to find your way to a new destination, and you come to a crossway where you can only either go left or right. Everyone has a private imperfect signal (call it "judgment" or "opinion"). For simplicity, let everyone have a private signal "left" ("right") with probability 2/3 if the true best choice is to go left (right). So, the signal helps but it is not perfect. Everyone's signal is equally good.

"Now, assume that you are the third person to choose, and you first saw a man and then a woman go left. I claim that it is optimal for you to go "left" even if your private signal/intuition says "right". Why? You know that the man must have had an "l" signal, because he went left. The woman saw the man go "left." She would have figured out that the first individual's signal was "left". If her private signal was "left", she would have surely walked left, too. If her signal was "right", she would have been aware of one right and one left signal. She might have walked either way.

"Now it is your turn. Having seen both the man and the woman walk "left," you know that the man had a "left" signal and the woman had a better than even chance of having had a "left" signal. Loosely speaking, the actions of your predecessors give you more than 1 "left" signal. Even if your private information is 1 "right" signal, net-in-net you should choose "left" if you are acting rationally---and so will everyone choosing after you. Now, everyone after you will know that what you did had nothing to do with your private information---but they will be in the same boat. The optimal decision will be to do the same thing and go left. One major consequence of informational cascades is that you may get a million rational individuals walking "left" just because the first two individuals walked "left", even if the true best choice was "right." (This will happen with more than 1/3*1/3=1/9 probability [first two individuals got incorrect "left" signals].)

"So, what does this mean for society? Cascades predict that you can get massive social imitation, occasionally leading everyone (the "herd") to the incorrect choice.
"

I believe this explains why so many in the Bahai world made an incorrect choice in abandoning the Guardianship without even giving it a thought.  The Custodians abandoned the Guardianship, and the entire group, lost in the herd instinct, simply followed.

But herein lies the solution to the problem.  Because the second half of the informational cascade theory is the concept of fragility.  This part of the theory points out that only a little bit of information can overturn even a long-standing informational cascade.  In other words, the informational cascade is based upon little or no information and therefore it is fragile.  The way to overturn this fragile state is to introduce just a little bit of correct information.  The herd then turns in the opposite direction.  Instead of going left, the herd now sees that moving to the right was the correct answer.

This is the function of the Orthodox Baha'is in this day.  It is our job to introduce the little information necessary to overcome the long-standing erroneous choice of the Bahai world to simply abandon the Guardianship.

I encourage you to get that information:

The shallow and hollow Faith

I have said many times that the sans-Guardian Baha'is (those presently headquartered in Haifa and Wilmette) have so lost their way that their Faith has become a mere shell of a religion, shallow and hollow.

In this interesting account by a Bahai, of her journey to the India House of Worship, the truth of my opinions are confirmed.  Expecting to join thousands of Baha'is in worship, she finds nothing but an empty shell, shallow and hollow.

http://bahaitheway.blogspot.com/2007/10/wheres-god.html

It is time for everyone who considers himself or herself as a Bahai, to come over to the true Cause of God, under the guidance of the living Guardian, the Orthodox Bahai Faith.

The sans-Guardian Baha'is-- marketed on NBC as the most comfortable religion

One interesting contrast between the Orthodox Bahai Faith, and the dominating group of sans-Guardian Bahai's presently headquartered in Haifa and Wilmette, is the manner in which the two organizations promote their teachings.

The sans-Guardian organization actively markets the Faith as if it were a corporation selling household products.  They promote the Faith in an undignified manner by use of various marketing techniques such as billboards, to try to sell the Faith.  Their focus is almost entirely on increasing their numbers and raising money.  Raise money to increase the numbers; and increase the numbers to raise more money.  Your faith is measured by how much you give to the cause of increasing those numbers, both enrollments and money.  Rarely do they discuss subjects involving the mystical union of a soul with God, eternal life, or true loving kindness, and when they do it is with an eye toward making more Bahai's.

I recall that, when I left the sans-Guardian organization to join the Orthodox Bahai Faith, I was surprised to see what little emphasis was placed upon increasing the numbers or with making financial contributions.  The emphasis was and still is on deepening one's knowledge in the fundamental verities of the Cause.  The outreach by the Orthodox Baha'is consisted of occasional newspaper and magazine advertisements and internet web pages, in an effort to make the true teachings of the Faith available to the public.  Other than that, there was never any concern for whether there were enrollments.  Even when somebody approaches the Orthodox Baha'is stating their intention to join the Faith, instead of being quickly absorbed into the community, an effort is made to ensure that those seekers have a deepened knowledge of the Faith's teachings before their declarations are accepted.  The focus is on quality of faith and true understanding rather than a large number of enrollments.  There is no effort to sell the teachings or make more Bahai's.  The sans-Guardian Baha'is even have the audacity to criticize the Orthodox Baha'is because of the fewness of their members, not realizing that we have a religion here, and not a product to be sold.  The Orthodox Bahais have no interest in trademarks, copyrights, market share, marketing and other corporate nonsense that occupies the attention of the sans-Guardian Baha'is.

The sans-Guardian Bahai's, having no divine guidance whatsoever, have clearly lost their way.  This has never been more evident than in the recent NBC news piece on religious faiths, which features the Bahai Faith as being the most "comfortable" faith to join.  Here is a video clip of that piece:
http://video.msn.com/video.aspx?mkt=en-US&brand=msnbc&vid=cdaf2f7d-ad01-4c65-9f6c-390ea4305ea7

Of all the reasons to choose a specific religious path, the least valid one in my opinion is to pick out the one that seems most comfortable.  You are not picking out a mattress.  For heaven's sake, you are seeking the Truth and not a comfortable consumer product!  The whole focus of the NBC News piece was which religions are gaining members and which are losing them, and market studies of favorable or unfavorable opinions of the various religions.  The only person they interview in all of this is none other than a sans-Guardian Bahai who joined the Faith because it was a "modern fit" and she did not want her friends to think she was joining a "religion of the month club" presumably by actually searching for Truth.
